Two people were injured in a two-vehicle crash on Illinois Route 37 at Sassafras Road south of Salem late Wednesday afternoon.

State Police say a preliminary investigation indicates a vehicle driven by 47-year-old Angela Waggoner of Kell slowed to make a left-hand turn from Route 37 onto Sassafras Road when she was struck in the rear by an SUV driven by 22-year-old Riley Anderson of Iuka.   The Waggoner vehicle ran off the left side of the road, struck a culvert, and overturned onto the driver’s side.

Both Waggoner and a passenger in her vehicle, a 14-year-old female juvenile from Kell, were transported by ambulance to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.  Anderson escaped injury.

State Police say Anderson was distracted by her cell phone.  She was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and the operation of a motor vehicle while using an electronic communication device.

The crash occurred at 4:15 Wednesday afternoon.
