A 40-year-old Kentucky man has pleaded guilty to one of 36 first-degree murder counts filed against him in connection with the December 2021 shooting death of Wayne County Sheriff’s Deputy Sean Riley.
A sentencing hearing for Ray Tate was set for April 22nd at nine am in Wayne County Court.
Riley was shot to death when responding to a motorist assist on Interstate 64. He was found dead when his call for backup assistance was answered. Tate is accused of taking Riley’s squad car which he abandoned a short distance away when he forced a truck driver to drive him to Missouri. After a series of carjackings and attempted carjackings in Missouri, Tate forced another motorist to drive him back to Illinois where he was eventually taken into custody when taking both the driver and a rural Carlyle homeowner hostage.
Tate still faces 14 criminal charges in Missouri and could still face charges in Clinton County.
