An 18-year-old Odin man received second-degree burns to his face when a flash fire occurred as he poured lighter fluid on coals in a BBQ pit to try and get a hotter fire.
Odin Fire Chief Greg Smith says Landon Furlong of DePew Street was initially transported to the Salem Township Hospital helipad and then flown to a St. Louis Hospital for treatment. Smith reportedly, fortunately, the injuries did not turn out to be as serve as originally thought and Furlong was released on Monday following treatment.
Smith says Furlong was at a friend’s home on the 300 block of Perkins Street when they decided to light the grill for a BBQ.
The incident occurred at 8:15 Sunday night.
