Allen Breeze Simpson, 86, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 2:01 am February 14, 2023, at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor.
He was born September 9, 1936, in Wayne County, Illinois to the late Cecil and Tressie (Elliott) Simpson. Allen married Sandra (Barnard) Simpson on December 11, 1965. They were blessed with 57 years of marriage.
In addition to his beloved wife, Allen is survived by his sons, Keith (Florence) Simpson of Cocoa Beach, Florida, and Marshal (Caryn) Simpson of Mount Vernon; grandchildren, Charles Simpson, Lauren Simpson, Camdin Simpson, and Madison Shepard; sisters, Doris Rowland of Texas, Betty Brown of Georgia, Norma Haegele of Fairfield, Illinois, and Joan Tyler of Mount Vernon; twin sister, Ellen Bass of Montgomery, Illinois; brothers, Elmer Simpson and Walter Simpson of Fairfield; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Allen was preceded in death by his siblings, Wanda Simpson, Herman Simpson, Elmo Simpson, and Sherman Simpson.
Allen was born in rural Fairfield and is one of 12 siblings that were born to Tressie and Cecil Simpson. Allen spent his childhood on the family farm southeast of Fairfield. He enlisted in the US Army and was stationed in Virginia Beach with the duties of unloading cargo ships and delivering mail. After the Army, Allen helped his uncles Limon Elliot and Bernard Simpson. This led to a career driving a semi for Southern Wholesale Lumber, Specter Freight, Roadway Express, and Yellow Freight. In his spare time, Allen enjoyed helping others through carpentry, volunteering for Jefferson County Crime Stoppers, serving as Jefferson County Republican Precinct Committeemen, plus supporting various community organizations. He loved fishing, hunting, and spending time at family gatherings, especially the Simpson Chowder.
A Visitation will be held Thursday, February 16, 2023, from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will be held Friday, February 17, 2023, at 10:30 am at Hughey Funeral Home with Mr. Randy Sells and J.C. McDuffee officiating. Interment will follow at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Allen’s honor at Park Avenue Baptist Church.
