2023 02/16 – Virgil William Dane Jones

Virgil William Dane Jones, 78, of Centralia, passed away Monday, February 13, 2023, at his home.

Virgil was born April 16, 1944, in Centralia, the son of Virgil Dane Jones and Mamie Louise (Bryant) Jones. He married Linda Darlene Smith on September 1, 1963, at the Demaree Methodist Church in Centralia, and she preceded him in death on October 10, 2022.

Virgil is survived by two sons: Dennis Jones and wife Sandy of Tullahoma, TN, and Michael Jones and wife Kristy of Kell; four grandchildren: Megan Farrell and husband William of Tullahoma, Jennifer Jones of Tullahoma, Kevin Jones of Kell, and Ryan Jones of Kell, great-granddaughter: Isabell Farrell, and sisters: Kathryn Stover of Centralia, Richard and Kay Jones of Mt. Vernon, Jerry and Linda Miller of Dix, Mike and Debbie Hall of Centralia, sister-in-law Dorothy Kennedy of Collinsville, and several nieces and nephews.

Virgil lived in Centralia all of his life. He graduated from Raccoon Grade School and the Centralia High School Class of 1962. He served 6 years in the Air Force, stationed in Minot, North Dakota, receiving the rank of Sergeant. After returning to Centralia, he became a Carmen Welder for the Illinois Central Railroad for 25 years before retiring. He was a truck driver for a time and farmed most of his life. He was a member of Calumet Street Christian Church in Centralia. He enjoyed camping. He loved spending time with his sons and their families, especially his grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Virgil Jones will be held Thursday, February 16, 2023, at 11:00 AM at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia with Pastor Roger Lipe officiating. Visitation will be held Thursday morning from 9:00 AM until the time of service at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Centralia. Military Honors will be accorded at the gravesite by the Centralia American Legion Post 446 and the Centralia V.F.W. Post 2055. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Oil Belt Christian Service Camp, Flora, Illinois, and can be accepted at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 North Sycamore Street Centralia, Illinois 62801, (618)532-3523, which is honored to be of service to the Jones Family.
