The Kaskaskia College Paramedicine Program will offer an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program beginning March 15th.

Students successfully completing the program will be eligible to take the National Registry of EMTs’ (NREMT) certification exam.  Upon passing the NREMT exam, students may seek state licensure, which will qualify them to volunteer or be employed in professional EMT positions.

“This is an accelerated program with classroom and lab learning, online coursework, and clinical and field internship,” said Paramedicine Program Coordinator Stephen Durbin.  “Students must have access to the internet and be willing to learn at a fast pace.”

Classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings 4-10 p.m. It’s an eight-week program.  Typically, a standard EMT course takes four months to complete. The program will be held on the main Kaskaskia College campus.  The class will finish on May 12th.

“Becoming an EMT has several benefits,” Durbin said. “It offers you the ability to give back to your community.  You develop skills that can carry over to really any facet of your life, and a national certification that can be used anywhere in the nation. If you’re looking for a career in emergency medical services, this program is the foundation.”

There’s a definite shortage of qualified EMTs, both at the national level and locally, Durbin said.
