Salem sees little commercial activity but strong year for residential improvements in 2021

The City of Salem annual building permit reports little commercial activity, but a robust year for residential additions and the addition of garage and storage buildings. Permits were also issued for construction of three new homes.

Total new construction for the year was $1,882,624.

The only two new commercial construction projects was a small building added at Ucamp at 130 Missouri Avenue at a cost of $20,000 and a metal building constructed by Feron Ice at 518 South Broadway. There were three commercial additions totaling $89,500. They include the addition of a kitchen at Circle K on West Main for $27,500, an office addition at Molenhour’s Power Equipment for $12,000, and the $50,000 addition of an electrical shed at Conway Transportation.

Overall residential construction totaled around $1.7-million dollars. The total included the construction of the three new homes at 102 Coventry Crossing, 906 North Shelby and 1452 South College that totaled $873,000. Permits were also issued to locate mobile homes at 1231 South Franklin, 1109 South Marion, and 410 West Lake Street. There were 33 permits issued for residential additions, garage, or storage buildings. The largest was a $375,000 permit to Jared Hunter for an addition at 310 North Washington Street.

There was no multi-family residential development or church additions during the year.

Eleven demotion permits were issued during the year for homes and outbuildings.
