The Salem Planning Commission will hold a public hearing Tuesday night on allowing shipping containers to be used for storage in all business and industrial zoning districts in the city.
The public hearing was set after 6-10 Coffee Company made a request to use a shipping container, but were told they were not allowed in the city. However, a check of the city later found the shipping containers were already in use at a number of businesses without any approval from the city. At that point the city council requested a look at a zoning change and requested the planning commission hold a public hearing.
The hearing is determine support of using the shipping containers as either a permitted use or a special use. All other accessory use regulations, setbacks, lot coverage, size, and height, would still apply.
Use of the containers would still not be allowed in residential neighborhoods under the proposal.
The public hearing will be held at six Tuesday night at the Salem Community Activity Center.
