Iuka Grade School students and staff wound up to programs to help others last week.
Superintendent Sam Alli says the school’s Beta Club collected 1,600 canned goods during a food drive. The food will be given to less fortunate families in the Iuka Grade School District. He said the seventh grade just beat out the 4th grade to take top honors on the number of cans collected. The seventh grade had 330 cans and 4th grade 325. The Pre-K and Early Childhood class were third with 275 cans collected.
Alli says the fundraiser for the Wounded Warriors project was held for the first time under the direction of Junior High English Teacher Mindy Shoemaker at the suggestion of her students. $1,300 was raised to help veterans combat lingering injuries. Alli says the fundraiser was a byproduct of their Veterans Day program earlier in the month. He commended the all-hands-on-deck mindset of the school in making both of the projects successful.
