A 74-year-old Salem woman was pronounced dead at the scene of a head-on crash on Route 37 north of Mt. Vernon late Thursday afternoon.
Jefferson County Sheriff Jeff Bullard says Nancy Satterthwaite of Salem crossed the centerline of the highway and struck a tow truck driven by 34-year-old Christopher Bloom of Salem.
Satterthwaite was pronounced dead at the scene by Coroner Roger Hayse. She was extricated from her SUV by Jefferson Fie Protection District Firemen.
Bullard says Bloom was not injured.
The sheriff’s department is being assisted by Illinois State Police in investigating the circumstances as to why her vehicle crossed the centerline.
The crash occurred around four Thursday afternoon. Route 37 was closed to traffic until about 7:30 Thursday evening for investigation and cleanup.
