State Police Director says progress continues on reducing FOID card backlog

The Illinois State Police continues to reduce the FOID Card backlog.

Even after a major increase in FOID and concealed carry applications over the past year, ISP Director Brendan Kelly says they have reduced the backlog for new FOID cards by 75% and for renewals by 89%.  The ultimate goal?

“For new FOID cards we want to get it down to under 30 days and for renewals under 60 days.  We are moving closer to that and I expect by the end of the year we should have renewals mostly under that mark.”

Kelly says they are trying to improve safety while reducing bureaucracy.  New technologies, a streamlined system and additional staff have helped chip away at the stack of FOID requests to be processed.
