A fire that is believed to have started in the kitchen caused significant fire and smoke damage to the home of Trever Cannon at 2261 Colestock Lane off the Selmaville Road southwest of Salem on Saturday afternoon.

Salem Fire Chief Dave Duncan says a neighbor had spotted smoke coming from the residence and called the fire department.   Upon arrival, a fire was discovered in the kitchen area at the rear of the home.  After that fire was knocked down, the fire broke through in the second story of the home where it apparently had spread from the kitchen.   Flames were then visible from the front upstairs windows.     Firemen were able to knock down the fire before it could break through the roof.   The home received heavy damage in the kitchen area and significant damage on the second story.

Salem Fire Marshall Bill Fulton investigated the fire scene with a state deputy fire marshal Saturday evening.   No conclusion was reached on the cause of the fire, but it is believed to have started in the kitchen.

Fulton says Cannon had left the home about an hour and a half before the fire was discovered at 3:22 Saturday afternoon.   Firemen were on the scene for just over two hours.

Kell and Odin Firemen were called to provide mutual aid on the scene due to the amount of fire and concern about overheating due to the extremely warm and humid conditions.  Kinmundy-Alma Firemen stood by at the Salem Fire Station in the event of another fire.  There were no injuries.
