Centralia High School Superintendent Chuck Lane has joined nine other superintendents around the state in leading an effort to get local control over COVID-19 mitigations undertaken in the coming school year.
Lane says #makeItLocalIL is a request going to all school boards in the state to send an e-mail to the Governor, Illinois State Board of Education and Illinois Department of Public Health.
“Put it back on the school districts. We say thank you for your guidance through all the Covid protocol we went through now leave it on the each individual school district because the state’s not the same from Chicago down to Cairo. There is different things going on in different areas of the state with Covid. Let each school district and board decide if the kids wear masks or not. Obviously if the situation would get worse with Covid, we would adjust those mitigation efforts like we did throughout Covid.”
Lane says the letter also expresses frustration over the lack of clear, coherent, or updated guidance from ISBE, IDPH, and the Governor’s office as schools are about to welcome students back for the 21-22 school year.
Lane says they are NOT asking any superintendent or Board of Education not to follow guidance issued from the state.
