Winter wheat harvesting is ahead of schedule as we hear in the weekly crop report.
Crop Statistician Mark Schleusener says there were about three and a half days suitable for fieldwork this past week.
“Wheat harvest reached 87% finished compared to 79% a year ago and 82% for the five year average. Corn is now silking on 14% of acres in Illinois. That is 5 points ahead of one year ago but 8 points behind the 5 year average of 22%.”
65% of corn and 63% of soybeans are rated in good to excellent condition, with 22% of soybean acres now blooming. Average statewide topsoil moisture is rated as 3% very short, 13% short, 67% adequate and 17% surplus.
