Illinois Conservation Police will be running their annual campaign to crack down on drunk boaters over the 4th of July weekend.
Illinois Department of Natural Resources Spokesperson Tim Schweizer says Conservation cops are participating in the national Dry Water Effort with the goal of ensuring everyone stays safe.
“Here in Illinois, operating under the influence is the same as driving under the influence. The same kind of offense. We want those operating a boat, the boat driver, the Captain if you will to be safe while on the water, and the best way to be safe is to be sober.
State Conservation Police are also urging boaters to wear a life jacket and make sure one is available for each person on board.
DNR says alcohol continues to be the leading known contributing factor to boating deaths and accidents.
