The newly renovated Sandoval Village ballfield in the village park will be named the Steve Walker Memorial Field.
The decision came after Board Member Heather Day reported Walker’s name had first surfaced for potential naming and most of the others involved in the early days of organized baseball and softball in Sandoval all seemed to agree Walker deserved the honor. Walker was involved in starting the men’s and women’s softball and baseball program as well as many of the youth teams during the 1970s.
Meanwhile, the board was told most of the work completed in the park under the village’s State Department of Natural Resources OSLAD grant had now been completed. Village Administrator LeAnn Spieser says they are still waiting for a few items with the improved play area and ballfield. The new concession stand is complete.
There will be a park opening ceremony, but a date has not yet been announced.
In other action, the board approved a special use permit to allow two eight unit apartment buildings to be constructed along US 51 across the street from the Veterans Memorial portion of the park. David Stokes said surveying work will now be completed as they prepare to break ground on the project. Under the special use permit, the project will be allowed to construct parking on the village utility right of way, but will be responsible for making any repairs if a portion of the parking lot ever has to be torn up for repairs.
