Centralia City Councilman David Sauer has announced his resignation from the city council effective today (Wednesday).
The Mayor and City Council will have 60 days to fill Sauer’s council seat. The appointment will fill the vacancy until after the April 2023 municipal election.
In his letter to the City Clerk, Sauer said the citizens of Centralia have favored him with the opportunity of serving as a member of the city council for over ten years. He says he has come to know how the city works and in large part, it is due to the extraordinary employees working to keep the city vital. With tight budgets and mediocre pay, Sauer feels the city workers provide services of which all citizens should be thankful. He says he excludes none, from police, fire, streets, water, sewer, public properties, and administrative staff who all do more than residents have the right to expect.
Sauer says all four city managers that led the city during his tenure also deserve praise for the devotion they gave to the betterment of Centralia.
Sauer concludes his letter by saying ‘after serious considerations I have decided that now is the time for me to yield to others. Effectively immediately, I resign my position as a councilman for the City of Centralia.’
City Manager Forrest Langenfeld says David Sauer has been an outstanding example of a leader in our community throughout his time serving as a Councilman. Langenfeld says Sauer has had a lifelong commitment to public service having faithfully represented the residents of Centralia for more than ten years on the city council. Langenfeld says Centralia is a better community thanks to his dedication and commitment and he wishes him all the best.
Sauer was first elected to the Centralia City Council in 2011 and was re-elected for two more terms in 2015 and 2019 following an extensive career as an attorney and as Marion County Resident Circuit Judge. Sauer has also served on many committees and is very involved with many local and civic committees and organizations.
