Jefferson Fire Protection District Firemen were called to the Continental Tire Plant in Mt. Vernon late Friday afternoon when the dust collecting system at the retread building caught fire.
As a safety precaution, employees were evacuated from that building. The flames had already been knocked down as the sprinkler system worked correctly. The department then assisted in taking part of the system apart to change filters so it could be placed back into operation.
Employees were out of the building for about an hour while the initial work was completed.
The call came in around five Friday evening.
