Selmaville Grade School Superintendent Robin Brooks says the school district will be adding two positions next school year with federal COVID relief money.

Brooks reports the district will be adding a Pre-K and Early Childhood Teacher to begin a half-time Pre-K program and half-day early childhood program. A reading teacher will be added to the lower grades to give early attention to students with reading programs. Brooks says they hope to keep the positions with local funds after the federal funding expires after three years.

In addition, money from the half-cent sales tax will be used to expand a current half-time social worker-school counselor position to full-time to offer additional services to students.

For the first time in nearly a decade, Selmaville School will also be offering a month-long summer school aimed at students who are struggling. Brooks notes while Selmaville School never had to go to remote learning during the current school year because of COVID-19, they are still dealing with learning loss for some students from the shutdown of in-person learning for all students in the spring of last year. Brooks expects it will take a few years to bring all students back to grade level.
