A 29-year-old Charleston woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash on U.S. 40 near 900th Street near Effingham early Sunday morning.

State Police identify the victim as Alyssa Rhodes.  She was pronounced dead on the scene.

Rhodes was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 28-year-old Mara Ferguson of Charleston.  Preliminary investigation indicates Ferguson was traveling eastbound on US 40 when a vehicle driven by 33-year-old Andrew Welter of Altamont crossed the centerline while traveling westbound on U.S. 40 and struck Ferguson’s car head-on.

Welter and Ferguson were both transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Welter was ticketed for driving under the influence of alcohol, improper lane usage, and failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

The crash occurred at 12:16 Sunday morning.  The Illinois State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate.

(The original report from State Police had Rhodes listed as a passenger in the incorrect vehicle.)
