The Easter Bunny greets those arriving at the drive-through Wamac Easter Egg Hunt.
Both Salem and Wamac held successful drive-through Easter Egg hunts, but they didn’t attract the crowds of the past “actual” hunts.
In Salem, just under 100 vehicles lined up to have the kids handed a package of five candy-filled eggs, and if they were lucky notification that they had won a prize. Kay Pugh was one of the organizers for the 85th annual event for the sponsoring Salem Lion’s Club.
“Beautiful day. Everyone who was here, the kids were happy. The crowd was not what we expected so we will try again next year. It was something different than what we’ve done in the past and we succeeded in doing it.”
In Wamac, over 300 kids came through the Wamac Park in vehicles to get their candy-filled eggs. Mayor Butch Mathis says he didn’t want to go another year without something for the kids.
“Overall tip of the hat to the 8 motorcycle clubs and the city of Wamac, the councilmen, all the businesses and private individuals that donated, and the Centralia Masonic Lodge for helping out. Unfortunately with Covid last year the children were not able to have such an event.”
In past years, the hunts had attracted over 700 kids. Organizers were separating all of those who attended into age groups and will then draw to determine who will win the bicycles and other big prizes. Winners will be notified to pick up their prizes.
Both the Salem Lions and Wamac are hopeful of returning to the traditional Easter Egg Hunts next year after COVID-19.
