2017 Centralia High grad Latavia Maines is the #1 shot putter in the country as she competes for the University of Tennessee. The All-American opened up her outdoor season in record-breaking fashion as UT kicked off the week’s action at the FSU Relays in Tallahassee, Florida. Latavia set all-time program record in the shot put on Thursday night.
The reigning back-to-back SEC indoor shot put champion, Maines made her first outdoor appearance as a Lady Vol on Thursday and recorded a mark of 17.73 meters or 58 feet 2 inches to win the event. The redshirt junior broke the all-time record of 17.66 meters or 57 feet 11.25 inches set by seven time All American Annie Alexander in 2011.
Maines is considering competing at the Olympic Trials this summer.
