A 51-year-old Clay City man received what State Police are calling life-threatening injuries after crashing into the rear of an SUV.

The crash occurred on U.S. 50 at Sunset Road in Clay County. State Police say a preliminary investigation indicates 51-year-old Michael Spitzner of Clay City was traveling eastbound on U.S. 50 when he failed to slow and ran into the rear of an SUV that was stopped waiting to turn left onto Sunset Road. The driver of the SUV, 65-year-old Cathy Stout of Clay City, was not injured.

Spitzner was airlifted from the scene to a regional hospital for treatment of injuries. He was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

The crash occurred at 5:20 Wednesday afternoon.
