The Illinois Capital Development Board has announced the release of $2-million dollars to help pay for the resurfacing of the west parking lot of Kaskaskia College.
The college will contribute another $600,000 towards the Rebuilding Illinois project.
College President George Evans says in addition to resurfacing they will be working on elimination of problems that cause standing water and will have to move some light fixtures.
Evans says they are also seeking Capital Development Board money for the resurfacing of the other two major parking lots as well as replacement of heating and air conditioning systems to make them more energy-efficient. A total of $5.7-million is being sought for parking lot work and $5.5-million for heating and air conditioning improvements.
“It would take us 10 years to put money aside for that which is just not realistic. If the money comes, I am absolutely elated. This can help provide less of a stressor to our taxpayers too because ultimately we may have had to ask the taxpayers for assistance for these 45-year-old parking lots that are in dire straits. So we are excited and cautiously optimistic.”
Evans says while they will get everything set to go this year he anticipates the actual work may be delayed until next year.
Governor JB Pritzker, in announcing the release of the $2-million in funding, says it is the duty of elected officials to provide young people with the tools and resources they need to shape their future and achieve their dreams.
