State Police say both drivers were injured in an I-64 crash in Washington County on Wednesday when a truck ran into the rear of a slow-moving IDOT truck with an operating signboard directing a lane change for pothole patching.
The crash in the westbound lanes of I-64 at milepost 58 in the western part of Washington County shut down traffic for two hours for cleanup.
Preliminary information indicates the truck was driven by 41-year-old Gregory Pate of St. Louis. It failed to switch lanes and crashed into the rear of the IDOT vehicle driven by 60-year-old Joey Bryant of Mascoutah.
Pate was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. Bryant was transported to a hospital for minor injuries.
Pate was ticketed for improper passing an emergency vehicle, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and for not wearing a seatbelt.
The crash occurred at 10:26 Wednesday morning.
The Irvington and Ashley Fire Protection Districts, Washington County and Litton’s Ambulance Services, and Washington County Sheriff’s Office all assisted at the scene.
