Teacher of the Week Will Pennington receives weekly award for his work at Christ Our Rock High School from WJBD-WSIQ General Manager Bruce Kropp.
A 15-year member of the Christ Our Rock High School staff is the WJBD-WSIQ Teacher of the Week.
For Will Pennington, the definition of teacher has to be stretched well beyond being a history teacher.
“I’m involved with our Spiritual Life Guild we put on a little traveling chapel skit that we take to the Lutheran day schools and the New Horizon Christian School. Also involved with Scholastic Bowl, been head coach for that off and on currently the head coach again. I take care of the Perspective newsletter that goes out to the parents and other supporters of the schools. Vice Principal duties, attendance and other things like that, just many hats but I enjoy them all.”
Pennington says the school and students have been a blessing to him and he hopes he has been a blessing to the students. He says COVID-19 has made a difference.
“I think with almost every teacher, public or private, the lockdown was hard. It was hard not having the face time day to day with the students. It’s difficult trying to educate remotely. Like everyone else we have done the best we could. We have been very blessed this school year to be in person with the entire student body obviously masked and socially distant. We have had to utilize some different classroom space so we could maintain that social distance.”
Pennington says Christ Our Rock has only been out on remote learning for one week this school year just before Thanksgiving. He first came to Christ Our Rock as a part-time teacher, even though he was looking for a full-time position to start his teaching career, and felt what has happened since is a calling from God. The Executive Director and Principal at Christ Our Rock Don Duensing confirms Pennington has been a blessing for the school.
“One of the best things about working with him is he is a servant leader and he really doesn’t do it for things like this. And that’s what is neat about him getting an award like this is that his heart is for the kids and ministry. That is what makes it fun to work with him. When I talk to him he always has their interest at heart, the interest of the school and spreading the gospel at heart.”
