The Salem Wildcats kicked off the 2021 football season with a 21-6 home win over Mt Vernon. Playing the Rams for the first time since 1995, Salem got off to a quick start with 2 touchdowns in the first quarter to take a 14-0 lead on short touchdown runs by Brayden Smith and Shawn Bailey. Damian Leffler made it 21-0 with his 3rd quarter touchdown before Mt Vernon scored a late touchdown and missed their extra point. Keyton Mitchell led the ground attack for the Cats with 18 carries for 103 yards. In his first start at quarterback, Quentin Purcell went 4-of-16 for 71 yards and a pick. Salem will hit the road for Week 2 when they head to Alton Marquette.
