Balloon Fest will be held this August.
However, Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Marcus Holland is uncertain how the event will look due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Holland says the planning committee is now meeting and looking at three options. One would be a return to full activities in Foundation Park, possibly minus the entertainment in the bowl and the fireworks display. Another option is a drive-through event similar to what happened last year. The third is some type of event between what was held last year and the “traditional” Balloon Fest. Holland reports they will be seeking 35 hot air balloons to participate if enough sponsors can be found. The number was reduced to 25 last year for the limited drive-through event.
Holland says they will be seeking crafters and vendors to set up in Foundation Park and a decision will be made in June if they should move forward with that part of the event or refund the money.
Holland adds due to the measured success of the increased business for restaurants and retailers, they are looking at continuing the drive-through balloon glows. He says they learned that this is a perfect event for accessibility, for the young and old alike, and for those that find it difficult to get around the park on foot normally. In addition, Holland says it spreads people out throughout the community to support businesses, which is very important.
