A Wamac family was left homeless by a fire that destroyed their home Monday night.

Centralia Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Ross Boshera says it was initially feared a child might be inside the Charles and Linda Runyon home at 339 Sanders.   However, it turned out no one was at home when the fire was discovered coming out of the back upper story of the two-story home.   While the heavy fire damage was confined to the second floor, there was heavy smoke and heat damage to the first floor making the home a total loss.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

Centralia Fire Protection District officials were able to rescue two small dogs from the home, one that was unconscious.   Centralia City Firefighters who were on the scene for mutual aid used a pet oxygen mask to revive both dogs who were later taken to a vet to recover.

Lifestar Ambulance and Wamac Police also assisted at the scene.
