Road crews made considerable progress in clearing roadways on Tuesday as the strong north winds that were causing drifting problems finally calmed down.
The Illinois Department of Transportation is reporting I-57, I-64, and I-70 in South Central Illinois as clear of ice and snow, however, there are still a few slick spots so caution is still needed. I-57 north of Farina is still reported as partly snow-covered through the Mattoon area. State and US Routes are also mostly clear of snow and ice across the region.
Secondary roads are still snow-covered slick and hazardous. Marion County Highway Engineer Mike McCormick says all county roads are open, but some may have only one lane of travel in places. City crews in Salem and Centralia also made progress in making the secondary road passable.
