Jefferson County Fire Protection District officials say a fire damaged a portion of a building being renovated for Cardinal Buildings of 17182 Illinois Route 15 about a mile east of Mt. Vernon.
The fire was in a 20 by 20-foot area of the total 60 by 200-foot building. There was minor smoke damage to the rest of the building. While the cause of the fire appears to be electrical, the State Fire Marshal’s office was called in to confirm the cause.
The fire was discovered just before seven Thursday night with firemen on the scene for several hours.
