The Centralia City Council Monday night will be asked to accept a $125,000 Strong Communities Program grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority. Community Development Director Gayla Harting says the goal of the grant is to return vacant residential properties to productive and taxable use through rehabilitation and provide the funds for demolition in cases where properties are beyond repair and negatively impacting neighboring residences.

She says the proposed agreement will support the revitalization and efforts that are already ongoing.

The council will be asked to accept a bid from Trikote for the protective coating restoration for one of the city’s 500,000-gallon East Rexford Street water tower along with a ground storage reservoir and miscellaneous concrete work at the water treatment plant. The total cost of the project is $448,800.

A bid from Miles Chevrolet for the purchase of a 2021 Four Wheel Drive Police Package Pursuit Rated four-door full-size SUV will be considered. The cost is $42,023.

An ordinance will be considered to purchase a vacant property at 129 North Maple at a cost of $750 from the Marion County Tax Trustee. The city has been given the opportunity to purchase the property to recapture the expense of the demolition costs earlier incurred by the city.

The council will be asked to appoint Steve Coleman to the city’s Preservation Commission.

Finance Director Michelle Liggett will be recognized for 15 years of service to the city.

The meeting begins at six Monday night and will be held via Zoom conference call due to COVID-19 restrictions.
