COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Jaden Ivey scored 15 points and made a tiebreaking 3-pointer with 5 seconds remaining, and Purdue rallied to beat No. 15 Ohio State 67-65. Trevion Williams scored 16 points for the surging Boilermakers, who have won four straight, three of them on the road. Sasha Stefanovic also had 15 points. Purdue led for less than three minutes overall and rallied from six points down in the final 3 1/2 minutes. Ivey scored eight points during the decisive stretch. Duane Washington Jr. led Ohio State with 21 points, shooting 6 of 9 from 3-point range. Justin Ahrens added 12 points for the Buckeyes, whose three-game winning streak ended.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Kofi Cockburn had 21 points and 12 rebounds, leading No. 22 Illinois past Penn State 79-65. Cockburn leads the country with 11 double-doubles this season. Ayo Dosunmu and Trent Frazier added 13 points apiece for Illinois. Myreon Jones scored 20 points and Seth Lundy added 13 for Penn State. COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) — The women’s basketball game between No. 7 Maryland and Iowa, scheduled for Thursday night, has been postponed because the Hawkeyes don’t want to travel with the inauguration being held one day earlier. Iowa was scheduled to fly into Baltimore-Washington International Airport on Wednesday night. But Maryland posted news of the postponement on Tuesday night, saying Iowa decided not to travel “out of caution” because of inauguration activities. This year’s inauguration is being held amid unprecedented security measures after a violent mob supporting President Donald Trump invaded the U.S. Capitol two weeks ago.
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) — The Big Ten Conference has reprimanded interim Penn State basketball coach Jim Ferry and fined the university $10,000 for comments Ferry made following a loss to Purdue. Ferry was called out by the conference for his actions after the Nittany Lions lost to the Boilermakers 80-72 to fall to 3-5. Ferry was given a technical foul during the game and questioned the consistency of the officiating afterward. The conference said his comments were in violation of the league’s sportsmanship agreement.
UNDATED (AP) — Coach Steve Pikiell isn’t worried about the four-game slide that has caused Rutgers to drop out of the AP Top 25. The Scarlet Knights have struggled since opening the season with six consecutive wins and then running into a buzz-saw schedule in one of college basketball’s toughest leagues. There are six Big Ten teams currently in the Top 25, and Rutgers has lost to No. 4 Iowa, No. 10 Wisconsin and No. 15 Ohio State twice in dropping five of its last six. Pikiell says every team goes through a tough stretch. Rutgers plays at Penn State on Thursday night.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — That much-anticipated opening Thursday of March Madness will belong to the play-in teams. That is part of a scrambled and modestly condensed schedule for the 2021 tournament, which has placed all 67 games in Indiana. The so-called “First Four”will still include the last four at-large teams in the field and the lowest-rated conference champions. Those eight teams will play each other Thursday, March 18. The first two full days of action are now scheduled for Friday and Saturday, with the round of 32 taking place Sunday and Monday.
