The Marion County Sheriff’s Department confirms they are detaining a suspect in connection with a search that developed Friday night when a man fled a traffic stop on I-57 at mile marker 113 three miles south of Salem.
The suspect, whose name has not been released, was found walking Saturday morning on South Broadway on the south edge of Salem.
State Police reported a male subject described as a black male, 5 feet 10 inches tall, and weighing 145 pounds, ran from the traffic stop in an unknown direction and was possibly armed.
A search intensified after a man meeting the general description was reportedly seen at a home on the South College Street Extension. While the man reportedly looked like he might have a gun, the caller did not see any weapon.
Salem Police and Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies then spent the evening checking out potential leads at vacant homes and storage units before activity slowed in the early morning hours.
The suspect is being held in the Marion County Jail for questioning by State Police who is handling the case.
We’ll have more updates as information becomes available.
