The Illinois State Police is adopting the NAACP 10 Shared Principals of Police Reform.

The Principals recognize the need to treat everyone with dignity and respect and to build trust between police and communities.

ISP Director Brendan Kelly says they have already put the principals into action.

“We’ve added training to include de-escalation techniques to peacefully resolve situations that are dangerous to both the community and to law enforcement.  We’ve appointed the most diverse command staff in the Illinois State Police history with men and women from varied backgrounds and communities with seven of our 14 top command from minority backgrounds.”

The announcement comes as Illinois lawmakers are set to discuss a broad range of criminal justice reforms while they are back in Springfield, such as ending cash bail and reducing police officers collective bargaining rights.
