15th District Congresswoman Mary Miller has issued an apology about remarks she made at a recent Moms for America event in Washington, DC where she quoted Adolf Hitler.
Miller says the comments were made before a group of mothers about the importance of faith and guarding our youth from destructive influences.
In her statement, Miller says she sincerely apologizes for any harm her words caused and regret using a reference to one of the most evil dictators in history to illustrate the dangers that outside influences can have on our youth. She says this dark history should never be repeated and parents should be proactive to instill what is good, true, right, and noble into their children’s hearts and minds.
Miller says while some are trying to intentionally twist her words to mean something antithetical to her beliefs, she says she wants to be clear that she is passionately pro-Israel and will always be a strong advocate and ally of the Jewish community.
Miller says she has been in discussion with Jewish leaders across the country and am grateful to them for their kindness and forthrightness.
Miller’s comments have drawn numerous calls for her resignation, including US Senator Tammy Duckworth and Democratic US Representatives Jan Schakowski and Marie Newman. Both Democrats and Republicans as well as Eastern Illinois University, where she earned one of her degrees, have all
condemned Miller’s initial comments. The head of the Illinois Republican Party said she needed to apologize, which she has now done.
Meanwhile, Moms for America have issued a statement saying the comments were taken out of context and that Miller is owed an apology.
