John R Gockel, 94, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 9:25 am January 5, 2021 at his granddaughters residence in Belleville, Illinois. Mr. Gockel proudly served his country in the United States Navy during World War II. He was a member of Amvets Post #4 and Charter member of Mount Vernon Masonic Lodge #31 AF and AM. John was of the baptist faith and will be dearly missed.
A Visitation will be held Sunday, January 10, 2021 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm at Mount Vernon Memorial Gardens in Woodlawn, Illinois. A Graveside Service will begin at 1:00 pm with Reverend Mark Dye officiating. Full Military Rites will be held at the cemetery. Interment will follow. Memorials may be made in John’s honor to Amvets or the American Legion.Please remember to observe social distancing at this time. We are limited to 10 people in the tent at a time. John married Elsie (Mays) Gockel on April 25, 1975 in Mount Vernon, Illinois. In addition to his wife of forty-five years, John is survived by his son, Terry Lee Gockel and wife, Sherry of McCallaster, Oklahoma; step son, Randy Lowery of West Frankfort, Illinois; grandchildren, Katherine Gockel, Joseph Paul Gockel, Eric Gockel, Ashley Gockel, Andria Clarke, Tyler Lowery, and Whitney Walker; great-grandchildren, Hannah, Christian, and Lydia Gockel, Alyson Craig and Ian Bonner, Justine Mize, Brennan and Wrenley Walker, and Sawyer Clarke; and several nieces, and nephews.
He was born October 29, 1926 in Jefferson County, Illinois to the late Tony and Aureh (Yost) Gockel. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his sons, Bob Gockel and Rick Gockel; brother, Tony Gockel; sister-in-law, Emma Lee Gockel, and grandson, John Robert Gockel.
