A fire began in an abandoned home at 1128 Wilkins late Sunday afternoon.
Mt. Vernon Firefighters say a room and its contents were on the fire and flames could be seen through the roof. Firemen were able to quickly knock down the blaze.
Jefferson Fire Protection District Firemen provided mutual aid at the scene while Woodlawn stood by at the Mt. Vernon station in the event of another fire.
The fire call came in around five Sunday afternoon. Firemen were on the scene for about two hours.
