A rural Mt. Vernon home was destroyed in a Wednesday night fire.
Jefferson Fire Protection District officials say the single-story home at 11312 North Seven Mile Lane east of Mt. Vernon was fully engulfed upon their arrival. The person at home at the residence was able to get out without injury.
The cause of the fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal’s office.
Mutual aid was received at the scene from Mt. Vernon City, Bluford, and Waltonville firefighters while Benton and Woodlawn stood by at the Jefferson Rural station in the event of another fire.
Firemen had to haul water to the scene from a fire hydrant near General Tire and faced additional difficulty because the home was down a long narrow lane.
The fire alarm came in at 5:35 Wednesday night. Firemen were on the scene for about four hours.
