WASHINGTON (AP) — Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin is poised to become the top Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, and that would make him a key ally of President-elect Joe Biden.

It’ll be up to Durbin to help Biden achieve his goals on judicial nominees and immigration. Durbin says in an Associated Press interview that the committee has become “a shell of its former self” and needs to be revitalized. He says some policy issues that need to be tackled right away under Biden include reinstatement of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program. That program allowed people brought to the U.S. illegally as children to remain as legal residents.
