Salem City Council to consider garbage collection and leaf vacuum fee increases

By News Dec 7, 2020 | 8:31 AM

The Salem City Council Monday night will consider increases in the garbage collection and leaf vacuum fees. City Manager Rex Barbee is suggesting a $1 a month increase in the garbage collection fee and 45-cents per month for the leaf vac.

The City Manager notes under the new contract with DBS for garbage collection, the city will be charged 75-cents more per month per residence. Barbee says in recent years the city has relied on a dwindling surplus to cover the extra cost. He says the fee for the leaf vac service was last increased in 2009 with the cost of maintaining the program increasing annually.

The council will consider the purchase of a new skid steer with attachments for the public works department. The apparent low bid is for $53,885 from Bob Cat of St. Louis without the additional attachments. The purchase is budgeted and the overall cost is below budget.

The council will be asked to give first reading approval to a Social Media Policy. It would require all Facebook posts and web-page entries be archived.

A bid opening will be held for a tract in the Salem Industrial Park complex. The bids are expected to be discussed in closed session, with possible action to follow. The meeting will be held via Zoom Conference call beginning at six Monday night.
