The Illinois Supreme Court has announced that retired Justice Milton Wharton has been unanimously reappointed as an Appellate Court Justice to the 5th District Court headquartered in Mt. Vernon.
Justice Wharton will fill the vacancy left by Justice David Overstreet being elected to the Illinois Supreme Court. The appointment will begin Monday and terminate on December 5th, 2022 when the vacancy will be filled by the winner of the November 2022 general election.
Justice Wharton was originally assigned to the Fifth District Appellate Court on November 1st, 2019 to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the Honorable Melissa Chapman.
Justice Overstreet will administer the oath to Justice Wharton next Monday.
Justice Overstreet says serving with Justice Wharton over the past year on the Appellate Court, he has witnessed firsthand Wharton’s wisdom, temperament, and diligence to the law. Overstreet says his experience and accomplishments throughout his remarkable career speak for themselves and is very pleased that he has agreed to continue his service to the Fifth District.
Wharton served with distinction in the 20th Judicial Circuit, first as an associate judge beginning in 1976 and later as a circuit judge prior to his 2012 retirement.
