The Murray Developmental Center in Centralia is once again dealing with an outbreak of COVID-19.
There are currently 56 confirmed cases in the last 19 days. The number includes 24 residents and 32 staff.
In a joint statement, State Senator Jason Plummer, State Representative Charles Meier, the Illinois Department of Public Human Services, and the Clinton County Health Department say they are taking every precaution for the individuals receiving care and for the staff working at Murray who have tested positive for COVID-19.
Murray Center Parent Association President Rita Winkeler says most of the problem this time has been centered at Fir Cottage where 23 residents and 20 staff had tested positive by Saturday. The number of staff cases continued to grow the past few days. After every two-week testing began on November ninth, there were also 3 to 4 staff at Berry Cottage who tested positive but no residents.
Once again, Winkeler is commending the staff at Murray for their work.
“I think the staff is really doing a fabulous job. They learned so much since March and April when we had the first outbreak. They have continued to sanitize, wear their PPE’s. The doctors, nurses, administration, and regular staff all working together to make sure everyone gets the best care.”
Winkeler says the parents had just started to make inside visits, but all visits have now ended until the outbreak is under control.
The state officials are urging everyone in Clinton County to work collaboratively in the public interest to limit the further spread of COVID-19. To protect the residents and staff of Murray Center, as well as their families and others in the community, you are reminded to wear a face covering, wash your hands, and practice social distancing measures. They note the actions can save lives and prevent short and long-term health problems.
