A 36-year-old man has been arrested for stalking after allegedly hooking up a GPS unit in his former girlfriend’s car to keep track of her whereabouts.
Salem Police say John McCarty of South Pruyn Street is accused of hooking up the GPS while working on the car a few days before they broke up in January. McCarty then allegedly sent text messages indicating he knew her whereabouts as she traveled around.
The woman, who lives in Centralia, reported the incident to Salem Police a few days later who located the device and took it off her car. Police have been looking for McCarty since January when they located him on Wednesday and took him into custody without incident.
McCarty was later released from the Marion County Jail pending further investigation on the case.
