Marion County voted heavily Republican in Tuesday’s General Election, sweeping every seat.
In the process, Republican Tiffany Schicker defeated Democrat Cathy Malone for Circuit Clerk 10,435 votes to 6,412 votes. Malone thanked her supporters.
“I want to thank Steve Fox and his incredible staff. They have worked their fingers to the bone during the early election and tonight, they have been simply amazing. Then I want to thank everyone who came out and supported me and voted for me. It was an honor for me to represent my party, but the voters have spoken, and I wish Tiffany the best of luck.”
Republican Coroner Troy Cannon won re-election, defeating Democrat Nicholas Heath 10,542 votes to 6,255 votes.
“It’s been a long day, that’s for sure. I just want to thank everyone who supported me again and stuck in my corner and encouraged me through this whole thing. I’m please with how it turned out. I would like to congratulate Nick Heath for a good campaign, a clean campaign, he’s a gentleman and a professional and did a good job. I want to pat him on the back,” said Cannon.
The Republicans will occupy every seat of the 15 member Marion County Board as District Four Incumbent Gary Joe Sanders went down in defeat and District Five Democrat Debbie Young did not seek re-election.
In the contested District Four race, the winners were Republican Christopher Krupp who finished with 2,008 votes and Incumbent Republican Judith Meeks-Hakim who garnered 1,588 votes. Sanders finished third with 1,145 votes and Democrat Bobby Kell, Junior had 769 votes. In District three, Incumbent Republicans Steven Whritenour, with 2,136 votes, and Judy Shafer, with 1,832 votes, won re-election over challenging Democrat Carrie Perkins-Schnicker. She had 957 votes.
Marion County residents overwhelmingly voted for President Trump 12,540 votes to Joe Biden’s 4,396 votes. U.S. Senator Dick Durbin won election statewide, but fell in Marion County to Mark Curran, Junior 11,592 votes to 4,986. In the 15th District Congressional Race, Republican Mary Miller had 12,157 votes to Democrat Erika Weaver who finished with 4,648 votes. In the 107th State Representative race, Republican Blaine Wilhour topped David Seiler in Marion County 12,358 votes to 4,408 votes.
Marion County voters were heavily against the Illinois Constitutional Amendment to change the state income tax from a flat tax to a graduated tax based on income. The vote was 13,135 against and 3,792 in favor.
In the election for Supreme Court Justice from the Southern District of Illinois, David Overstreet topped Judy Cates 12,262 votes to 4,568 votes. For the open 5th District Appellate court seat, Mark Boie beat Sarah Smith in Marion County 11,439 votes to 5,225 votes.
Marion County residents voted in favor in an advisory vote of joining all other counties except Cook in leaving Illinois, 11,855 votes to 4,804 against.
