The President of the Greater Salem Chamber of Commerce is recommending a “no vote” on the Progressive Tax Amendment on the November 3rd general election ballot.
After members who participated in an on-line poll voted 18 to one against the tax change, Chris Daniels issued a statement saying the Constitutional Amendment would allow the legislature unbridled control of taxation. He says the chamber is greatly concerned the unstructured tax proposal would give unrestricted control to the Cook County controlled legislature without the present constitutional restrictions.
Daniels, in his statement, says it would also not promote the needed reform of public spending to balance the budget. He fears when the legislature realized that the budget still can’t be balanced by taxing the rich, their focus will then turn on unfairly taxing the middle-class business owners and pensions.
The amendment will need either the approval of 60-percent of voters voting on the question or greater than 50-percent approval from all voters who cast ballots in the election.
