The traditional Halloween Costume contest in Salem will go on, but outside to meet COVID-19 restrictions.
Marion County YMCA Program Director Jed Casburn says the program that has been held at the Salem Theatre the last few years will be moved to the new city parking lot just west of the Salem Fire Protection District.
He’s asking those who want to be judged to try and arrive by 5:15 Friday evening. The judging will begin at 5:30.
There will be four divisions this year. They are three and younger, 4 to 7 years old, 8 to 12 years old, and family. The Salem Community High School drama students will be the judges.
Salem’s Trick or Treat will follow from six to eight pm Friday night for those 12 and under.
Salem Police Chief Sean Reynolds says everyone needs to exercise their best judgment on Trick or Treating. Those who participate are asked to take safety precautions. Reynolds is encouraging those giving out candy to spread it out on a table so the trick or treaters can pick it up without making contact with the other candy or the person handing out the candy.
The Salem Fire Protection District and City of Salem have announced they will not participate in their traditional distribution of candy in front of the fire station and city hall due to concerns over social distancing and COVID-19.
