The Salem Elk’s have presented their highest honor to a lifelong Salem resident for his involvement in multiple organizations.
The Distinguished Service Award was presented to Joe Black at the lodge’s annual Membership Appreciation Dinner on Saturday night.
The Elk’s Mike Hooe read from Black’s list of accomplishments.
“He has served as deacon and elder at the Presbyterian Church for the last 73 years. He was in the Illinois National Guard for 7 years. He was a member of the American Legion, Salem Chamber of Commerce. He served 42 years on the Salem Airport Authority. He’s also a past president of the Salem’s Shrine Club and still an active member in that. 45 years in the Masonic Lodge. He has been with the Lions Club for 63 years during which time he has served as past president twice. He is a past Exalted Ruler two times for our lodge and a member of our lodge for the last 62 years.”
And Hooe says Black’s role as Santa Claus throughout the community for decades cannot be forgotten. Black was unable to attend due to illness. It was accepted by his wife Mary who thanked the Elk’s for the recognition. The Elk’s presented George Nattier as the Elk of the Year for his volunteer work for the lodge where ever it was needed.
John Roddy was named Officer of the Year for being an essential board member who leads by example and treating others with respect.
Mike and Sherry Morton were named the Elk Family of the Year. Mike is a 49-year member of the Elks, two times Exalted Ruler, and one of those who came together to revitalize the lodge. His wife Sherry was recognized for working alongside her husband, especially on the Elk’s Chicken Sundays. Jim Davis, Kent Gruenkemeyer, and Ron Eller were all named Outstanding Members for their work on behalf of the lodge.
Becky Roddy, Annette Whalen, and Amy Davison were named Lady of the Year for their work on various projects.
Bob Lafenhagen was honored with a Grand Exalted Ruler’s Special Citation.
