Fire burns in standing soybean field north of Kell Tuesday afternoon.

Kell Firemen received mutual aid from Salem and Iuka in fighting a field fire that burned ten acres of standing soybeans and came close to a home.

The fire off the Roosevelt Road a half-mile south of the Route 161 Extension began as a combine fire.   The operator Brad Furlong was able to drive to the roadway where a small fire was extinguished with minor damage.   But as firemen looked back to the field where the combine had been working they saw smoke.

Mutual aid was called to bring additional brush trucks to fight the fire in the field and protect the nearby Joe Littrell residence.  In all seven trucks worked to put out the fire.  The blaze came to within about 30 yards of the home.  The fire was fueled by the low humidity and low moisture content in the soybeans.

The fire call came in at 1:18 Tuesday afternoon.    Firemen were on the scene for about two hours.

Iuka Firemen were called out to both a combine fire and a woods fire Tuesday afternoon.  There was no damage to the combine that was believed to have gotten hot and started smoking due to dirt and dust build-up.  The small woods fire was at 2261 Apple Road southwest of Iuka and apparently spread from a trash fire.   No damage was reported.

Odin Firemen were called to extinguish a small field fire that covered less than an acre on property occupied by Drake Smith at 2709 Queens Avenue in the Royal Lakes neighborhood.   It apparently started from a trash fire.   No damage was reported.
