The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Department has released details on an early Friday evening accident that claimed the life of a ten-year-old rural Mt. Vernon boy.

Reports indicate that 10-year-old Braden Tate was playing baseball at his home when he went onto Route 37 to retrieve a ball and was struck by a car driven by 44-year-old Reggie Shemwell of Fairfield.   Tate was taken to a Mt. Vernon hospital and later transferred to St. Louis where he died later Friday night.  He was a student at Rome Grade School in Dix.

Shemwell was ticketed for felony driving on a revoked license, no mandatory insurance, and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.  The driving on a revoked license charge was a felony due to a prior conviction.   Shemwell was taken to the Jefferson County Jail where he remains pending a decision on formal charges and the setting of bond.

The incident occurred at 5:23 Friday night.
